Case Study
Eliminating Freight Data Delays to Improve Speed and Billing
Overview
A leading parcel and freight delivery provider partnered with The DDC Group to modernize how shipment data was captured and activated across its network.
By implementing a in-cab mobile data capture application, the client replaced delayed, manual workflows with real-time, GPS-tagged data at the point of pickup. That shift gave teams faster access to accurate shipment data, improved linehaul planning, and streamlined day-to-day operations. Billing cycles accelerated, driving measurable gains in both efficiency and customer service.
The Challenge
When Shipment Data Lags, Operations Slow
Operating across a high-volume parcel and freight network, the client relied on shipment data that was not available when decisions needed to be made.
Data was typically captured after drivers completed their routes, limiting visibility into freight in motion and constraining the ability to plan proactively. This created a disconnect between real-world operations and system-level visibility.
Key challenges included:
- Delayed access to shipment data, impacting linehaul planning and scheduling
- Fragmented workflows across freight documents and parcel labels
- Manual processes that slowed billing, collections, and operational coordination
- Limited ability to optimize workforce allocation and cross-dock operations
The business needed a scalable way to capture and activate shipment data earlier directly at pickup to improve speed, accuracy, and operational control.
The Solution
Capturing Freight Data at Pickup
The DDC Group deployed DDC Sync® Capture, a core module of the DDC Sync® data platform, to digitize shipment data the moment it entered the driver’s hands.
Capture, a key component of DDC Sync®'s comprehensive data orchestration framework, enables real-time data intake from the field and feeding downstream workflows across operations, planning, and finance.
The solution was enhanced to support both freight and parcel workflows within a single application, eliminating the need for multiple systems and manual handoffs.
By enabling drivers to capture bills of lading (BOLs) and parcel data in real time with GPS tagging, the client created a continuous, connected data flow from the field to the back office.
This provided immediate visibility into shipments, allowing teams to plan earlier, allocate resources more effectively, and accelerate downstream processes such as billing and customer updates turning captured data into operational decisions.
“We are continually looking for innovative solutions so we can provide our customers with the highest quality service. Capturing BOL information with DDC Sync® Capture the minute it’s in the drivers’ hands is a clear example of an innovative tool that is not only good for us but for our customers as well.”
